Paul Vitti (Robert DeNiro), a depressed mafia boss, is fed up with being in prison, particularly because someone is now trying to kill him despite his being locked up. Hoping to end his imprisonment, he fakes a psychotic episode and is released into the care of his psychiatrist Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal) who more or less willingly (I'd say less) agrees to receive Vitti in his house for the duration of the therapy. Sobel, who has just buried his father, isn't in the best mental state, either, and not really a match for his uninvited house guest.

You can't teach old dogs new tricks, and you can't teach an old mafia boss how to behave like a normal guy. Even though Vitti hates his old life, he can't get rid of it just like that and become a respectable citizen overnight, but there will be a happy end. Sort of.

Sequels to successful movies (and books) are always a tricky thing, because they rarely match the quality of the original. Analyse That isn't exactly an exception to this rule; the one-liners seem to be more clumsy, but maybe that was due to the German dubbing, because the Germans apparently like to "overdo" things. However, the duo DeNiro/Crystal is still good for a laugh, the best jokes being in the first half of the movie. More than one person in the audience might secretly wish a crackpot mafia boss to turn up in her house and shock her respectable relatives. This is not a movie that will impress you, but it's good entertainment for an afternoon or an evening if you have nothing better to do.
