End of DaysA movie by Peter HyamsWith Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robin Tunney, Gabriel Byrne and othersMonika says:
A few days before the new millenium Satan rises from Hell to father a son with a women chosen because of the hour of her birth. Once he’s up here he also wants to establish his reign on Earth and once and for all do away with his troublesome rival who has ruled for 2000 years. A couple of fanatic priests try to stop him by eliminating his "chosen bride" Christine York (Robin Tunney). But they didn’t reckon with ex-cop Jericho Cane (Arnold Schwarzenegger) who is determined to save the young woman and to defeat the Antichrist. It’s never a good idea to mess with Satan, though, and Crane is in for a very rough New Year’s Eve. Arnie is back and this time his mission is saving the world from the Antichrist. The part of the cynical Prince of Hell is played excellenty by Gabrial Byrne, although he is not allowed to show his full potential. Peter Hyams plays with primal fears still existing even in our modern days. This mixture of modern technology and medieval fear of apocalypse could have made for an interesting movie (including all neccessary action sequences), but just as was the case with RELIC a lot of potential was wasted and literally blown away with fireworks. Too bad, because the story is quite attractive and just the right vehicle for up-to-date special effects. There’s nothing wrong with Stan Winston’s FX, but they can’t save the movie either. It’s entertaining for the two hour duration of the movie, but there’s nothing memorable about the hellish racket. In the end most people will the more worried about the Y2K bug than about the return of the Antichrist. This movie is for Arnie fans only. |
