Private Investigator Tamara Hayle would prefer to stay as far away from her ex-husband DeWayne Curtis as possible. But she can’t always do that because he is the father of her son Jamal. When DeWayne’s oldest son Terrence dies - of a drug overdose, as it seems - she lets DeWayne persuade her to look into the circumstances of his death. Besides, she can use the money. At first she doesn’t believe in DeWayne’s theory that somebody is after all his four sons. Being an ex-cop she soon realizes that the police had too quickly put Terrence down as yet another dead junkie. Then DeWayne’s second son dies and once more the police wants to treat it as an accidental death. Among Tamara’s suspects is DeWayne’s arch enemy Basil Dupre to whom she feels an almost irresistible attraction. To get an answer to her questions she has to dig up the past of her ex-husband. The search turns into a race against time when Tamara realizes that DeWayne’s paranoid theory is true and her son’s life is at stake.

WHEN DEATH COMES STEALING is a solid mystery. Nothing out of the ordinary, but full of suspense and a fun read. Tamara Hayle is a woman who can take care of herself and her own. Being African-American doesn’t make her job any easier, even if that doesn’t come out too clearly in this book since she is investigating inside her own family. But there are flashbacks that give an impression of the discrimination she had to face in her old job. And the reader gets a good look at what it means to raise a son alone and protect him from drugs and crime.
