Sharon McCone has to think about a promotion offered by her employers,
the legal co-op All Souls. Accepting it would mean being tied to her desk
instead of working out in the streets. Therefore she almost welcomes the
distraction offered by the disappearance of her lover Hy Ripinski. Hy was
supposed to deliver the ransom for a kidnapped businessman, but now there’s
no trace of him, the money, or the victim of the kidnapping. Sharon
persuades Hy’s angry clients to hire her to find him which takes her to
her native city of San Diego. On the Mexican border she finds herself
faced with a complicated situation to unravel.
Sharon McCone is considered the mother of all modern female private
eyes. Marcia Muller wrote the first mystery featuring the San Francisco
based heroine with a distinct mind of her own in 1977. WOLF IN THE SHADOWS
like her other books is peppered with hints of her former adventures but
can still be enjoyed if you’ve never read one of the previous books. It
takes a while for the plot to take off and Muller can’t always insert
her moral message successfully into the story. It’s a book for mystery
fans who don’t look for the quick, cheap thrill but are interested in a
well-devised plot, three-dimensional characters and lots of local color. |
