Emma Bowles fears for her life. First she was almost pushed in front of a subway train, then somebody tried to run her over with a car. The driver was her husband’s ex-chauffeur. Martin Bowles doesn’t trust the detectives of the 87th precinct and hires private eye Andrew Darrow from Chicago as a bodyguard for his wife. But when Detective Steve Carella tries to check him out he discovers that is investigations bureau doesn’t exist. Martin Bowles has an affair and a very unfavourable marriage contract. Things get even more complicated. Is the sudden death of the former chauffeur connected with the case, or is that a separate crime? Carella and his partner Meyer Meyer investigate. On top of this Carella has to deal with the trial against the man who killed his father. Although he tries to talk her out of it, his mother insists on attending.

Ed McBain’s Steve Carella is no super-intelligent master detective, but just a regular police officer who does his job as best he can and is not immune to becoming a victim of a crime himself. McBain describes police investigations and court proceedings realistically and without frills. The book is filled with suspense, but don’t expect everything to come out all right in the end. This story is just like real life. It offers some unexpected turns, but never becomes implausible.
