Sparkle HayterWhat's a Girl Gotta DoChristina says:
Robin Hudson, TV reporter for New York based All News Network, is going through some hard times. Her career has gone down the drain after she embarrassed herself during a live newsbroadcast from Washington. Instead of talking to heads of states she is now busy uncovering a sperm bank fraud. Her husband Burke Avery just dumped her for a live Barbie doll. She is blackmailed by a mystery man who seems to know her darkest secrets. And she has lots of them. The blackmailer wants to meet her at the ANN New Year’s Eve party, but he ends up dead in a hotel room and of course Robin is one of the suspects. But she is not the only victim of blackmail at ANN. Nobody knows who the mystery man was and what else he might have found out about whom. Her co-workers kick loose an avalanche of public confessions while Robin tries to find the killer to clear her name and maybe go back to being a real reporter. Sparkle Hayter has first hand knowledge of TV journalism. She used to be a reporter for several stations, CNN among them. She takes her readers behind the scenes of a big news network. Her tongue-in-cheek account of the schemes and dealings behind the camera and the portrayal of New York City are the strengths of the book. Hayter’s detective Robin Hudson is a somewhat more grown-up and urbane version of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum. She holds her own and who dares to cross her has to face her vicious Epilady. There to help - or hinder - are a couple of interesting minor characters. They alone are reason enough to go out and get Hayter’s other books. The mystery plot that turns from blackmail to murder is well done with a twist at the end. A mystery that provides for entertainment and suspense with a gutsy heroine who from time to time goes slightly over the top. |
