In the middle of the night TV journalist Robin Hudson gets a call from the police. Her gynecologist Herman Kanengiser was killed in his practice and she was the last patient in his calendar that day. But her appointment had been cancelled. Since the good doctor apparently was connected to the SM scene Robin’s slimy boss at the news station ANN, Jerry Spurdle, wants her to do the story. Robin finds a couple of other motives, but they don’t bring high ratings and don’t interest Jerry. Robin has to keep her fiery temper in check, though, because her job is on the line again as the network is "re-structured". Somebody seems to hold a grudge against ANN’s male employees and panic spreads in the newsroom. And as if that wasn’t enough Robin’s aunt Mo is in town to drag her wayward niece away from the path of sin.

Robin Hudson masters her chaotic life with humor and tries to get by whatever happens. Her career as well as her love life is a roller coaster ride. She spends a large part of the book thinking about the latter and yet she doesn’t chase a guy at all cost and values her independence, something that sets her pleasantly apart from many a heroine you meet in books these days.

Sparkle Hayter describes New York with a twisted sense of humor and grants her readers a look behind the scenes of the TV news. Robin’s bizarre family history makes her even more likeable. Even if the case Robin had to solve in this book was a bit predictable her characters were unique.

I recommend this book and the entire series to people who like to grin and occasionally laugh out loud while reading mysteries, especially readers who agree with me that Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum is a tad too cute.
