Sparkle HayterThe Chelsea Girl Murders: A Robin Hudson MysteryWilliam Morrow & Co, New York, 2000Christina says:
With her house destroyed by fire, TV journalist Robin Hudson from New York finds herself on the street and moves into her friend Tamayo's apartment located in the Chelsea Hotel, the famous artists'lodging. Instead of enjoying her well-deserved vacation, she gets caught up in Tamayo's underground organization specializing in uniting lovers, and is again at the wrong place at the wrong time. But Nadia and Rocky aren't exactly Romeo and Juliet, and Robin once more stumbles across a body. Fortunately she can rely on her clan of strange friends. Just like Janet Evanovich, Sparkle Hayter takes her readers on a hell of a ride. However, compared to Stephanie Plum, Robin Hudson is a refreshingly grown-up heroine who has more important things to do than drooling over some guy all the time. Sporting a considerable dose of cynicism, she moves through the art scene at Chelsea Hotel and makes fun of everything, be it provincial tourists or the public at an avant-garde artists' party unable to tell a hostage situation from a happening. Unfortunately, Robin Hudson isn't as fresh as she once was, either. Everything has already been done, even though it is still funny to see Robin walking around in a cluster of nuns. Sparkle Hayter seems to be aware of this fact herself, since she has turned her interest towards a new series. Let's hope future Robin Hudson Books will also profit from this. |
